Are You at Risk
There is nothing wrong with gambling if this is done in moderation. However, people should be warned that spending too much time here instead of focusing on your family, job or studies brings dire consequences that you will regret for the rest of your life. The big question one should ask is if you are at risk of becoming a compulsive gambler. Compulsive gambling can be best described as a mental disorder in which a person has an uncontrollable urge to play various games in the hopes of getting cash rewards. Most of the time, people who are like that end up losing a lot that leaves them with a huge debt. So now we know what a compulsive gambler is, it’s time to find out if you are one of them. The strange thing about this disease is that the doctor cannot determine this for a fact because this is something you have to do on your own. The bottom line is that you are in control of your life. You know how often you go to the casino and how much you lost compared to how much you won. There are other questions aside from the two mentioned and this is something you have to ask yourself. For instance, have you borrowed money from people to pay off debts and still owe a certain amount? Even after losing so much, do you still continue to gamble in order to pay off debts and make a come back? Do you have trouble sleeping or feel anxiety or stress? What about feelings of depression? Do you hide the lottery tickets that you have purchased? Have you lied to your family or fought about this issue with your loved ones? Have you stolen money or done anything illegal in order to obtain it? If you are answered yes to most of the questions, you are definitely a compulsive gambler. But if your responses to some are no, this should already tell you that you are at risk of becoming one so it is best to stop now before it is too late. Those who decide to attend support groups like Gambler's Anonymous are well aware of what they have done and decided to get help. Sadly, many of those that decided to join a support group go back doing the same thing. This is because old habits die hard as a compulsive gambler. You can be clean for six months and then do the same thing again usually with disastrous results. A compulsive gambler by nature exhibits three characteristics: First, the inability or unwillingness to accept that he or she spend more time at the casino or online instead of doing something productive. Second: He or she possesses emotional insecurity. This may sound silly but many of those that were interviewed say that the only place they felt at home was at a poker table. If you look at it, this is impossible because you don’t have control over anything including the cards that were handed to you by the dealer. Third, the gambler is immature. Most people worked their butts off in order to be successful. They think there is a way to get around that and perhaps with some stroke of luck that doesn’t happen every time, it could happen. How many people do you know make a million overnight in a casino? You can probably count them in just one hand. Other places where you can find compulsive gamblers are in the stock market, individuals who play games online and those picking numbers in the lotto. While it is true there are people that have actually won, the odds of winning are more than a million to one. You surely don’t want to be a compulsive gambler after having heard the sad story from family members and friends that you know. Does this stop you from actually trying one form of gambling or another? Chances are the answer is no because you think you have self control. These people probably thought they did also but then got greedy and wanted more. If you want to take a chance, maybe its best to just bring $20. That way, you won't be tempted to use your credit card or pawn something valuable because people who are loaded each time they walk in are at risk of becoming compulsive gamblers. |
