Problem Gambling vs. Compulsive Gambling
It is perfectly normal for some to play in the casino. However, when this becomes a habit, the person could either be a compulsive or a problem gambler. You might think that the two are the same but they do have differences. The definition of compulsive gambling is the person's inability to stop doing it even when he or she realizes that it is negatively affecting their lives. Problem gambling on the other hand is a get rich quick scheme that some people do in order to fix their problems. Of the two, compulsive gambling is much worse. Some experts have also called this pathological gambling, which is very similar to alcohol or drug addiction because these people will do everything in their power to continue doing it. This doesn’t mean they have tried to stop in the past because these people have countless of times but were never able to quit. In most cases, you could be one or the other. This can happen to anyone and research shows that not only are these people the ones that play a game of cards but also those who put a coin in the slot machine, those who go to the track, people who play in the stock market and individuals who place a bet using the phone and watch how the game turns out. The symptoms for either of the two are the same and they are very evident. At work, your supervisor will notice that you are no longer that productive. You could be late or absent. If you begin to borrow money from friends, then things are really bad because you are in a heap of trouble paying off a large debt. Some will show anti social behavior to their own family and friends. They will think of excuses to miss out on one activity or another only to head on over to the casino and continue to gamble. A lot of experts believe that the main difference between compulsive and problem gambling is self-control. This means having the ability to stop and calling it quits. Some are able to do this while others don’t. The compulsive gambler acts that way due to a mental disorder. The American Psychiatric Association classifies this an impulse control disorder, which is a chronic and progressive mental illness. This means it will continue The problem gambler has no excuse. He or she will take the risk and just hope that things go their way. There is no skill involved here. Maybe just a prayer that the number they picked is the right one or the team they placed a bet on will win. Doctors have said that in both cases, people who gamble fall into three phases. We discussed these previously, but let’s go into more depth here. These phases are winning, losing and desperation. Those that are doing well will want to make more money while those who lose will do their best to recover the losses. The last, which is the desperation phase, will prompt the individual to find money in order to play again. It should be noted that the gambler never takes responsibility for their actions and blame the world for their misfortune. Treatment for compulsive and problem gamblers is the same. You can try group therapy like the 12 step program being used by Gamblers Anonymous. There are over 1200 locations nationwide so don’t be ashamed to walk in there and talk to someone because you are not alone. Those who don’t want to be in a group can try individual therapy. You can go to the clinic or have them come to you. Most of these experts are those in the field of psychiatry. If talking about the problem doesn’t help, medication such as an anti-depressant can be given to the patient. This drug is designed to stop you from having the urge to gamble similar to what is used to stop obese people from eating too much. By knowing the differences between the two, you can more or less determine whether you are a compulsive or a problem gambler. Doctors, of course, will have to confirm if you have a mental disorder or not. The bottom line is, you are wasting your money, throwing your career away and abandoning your family because you can't stop doing it. |
