Symptoms of Gambling Addiction
You can say that a person is drunk by the way he talks and walks. The same goes for those that have taken drugs. According to the American Psychiatric Association, here are the symptoms of gambling addiction. · Bailout – This symptom happens when the person has no money left and is hoping that friends and family will loan him (or her) a few bucks then pay them back later. Of course, this cycle never ends and no one will want to loan money to the individual again. · Chasing – Among the different symptoms of gambling addiction, this is the beginning of worse things to come because the individual who lost a bundle today will want to come back tomorrow and make up for the loss. This is classified as a classical behavioral pattern of pathological gambling. · Escape - When people have problems many wish those problems would just go away. Gambling then provides the person with an escape to another world similar to what happens when we watch a movie. · Illegal Acts – Here, the gambler is no longer able to borrow money. In order to play the game or pay debts, this person is compelled to commit a crime like forge documents, steal money or even engage in embezzlement. · Loss Of Control – This is considered to be a symptom of gambling addiction simply because he or she cannot help but go to the casino. The person knows he has a problem and the sad part is that this still happens because he is locked in to the behavior. · Lying – We have all tried to get help for someone that is a gambling addict. When this person is brought in front of a psychiatrist, he or she will deny that such a problem exists. · Preoccupation – He may have won a lot of money during this round but deep inside he is planning the next big score. Simply put, the individual does not know when to call it quits and hopes things will go in their favor. · Risked Significant Relationship – When a family breaks up and there is no third party involved, gambling or a vice is usually the reason. This can also happen, of course, if the person suddenly lost focus in school or gets booted out of a job. · Tolerance – This is also another symptom of gambling addiction because the person just has to play the game to win or attain a certain level of excitement. · Withdrawal – Here, the person wants to quit gambling but finds it hard to do so. The person will either feel irritable or restless. Should the person have one or two signs of any of the symptoms mentioned, doctors will classify this patient as a "at risk" gambler. If there are three or four symptoms, he or she is a problem gambler. Anyone that has 5 or more of the symptoms is the worse and classified as a pathological gambler. Apart from the symptoms of gambling addiction, you can tell if a coworker or even you have a problem by answering some questions. 1. Are you always late for work? 2. Do you use the phone often not for official calls but to talk to your bookmaker or stockbroker? 3. Do you frequently call in sick and miss a day of work? 4. Have you used your vacation time to gamble instead of having fun and relaxing? 5. Have you ever used the company car to head on over to the casino? 6. Has your boss called you in the office and asked you why your productivity has dropped? 7. Have you ever played cards or organized a gambling junket? 8. Have you borrowed money from coworkers to pay off some debts? 9. Have you ever defrauded someone of money or sold hot items? Unlike the symptoms, answering yes to just one of the questions means that you need help. You have to stop what you are doing because this could cost your job, your relationship with others and respect for yourself. Fortunately, there are various programs designed to help you quit gambling. The first step is to admit you have one of the symptoms of gambling addiction because chances are, you won’t believe if people think that you do. Read on. |
